Authenticity of Social Media Representations

The essentials to social media marketing is listening to your customers, and writing to engage and provide information of value to the readers. To what extent do we employ this idea in marketing ourselves via facebook, wordpress, twitter, etc?

If we did write focusing on what is valuable to our readers, how authentic would our profiles then be, would we be filtering and striving for acceptance, or could we naturally gain interest through our relationships with friends?
